Materializr is an open-source 3D CAD application aimed at makers, positioning itself as a middle ground between very simple tools such as Tinkercad and full professional suites like FreeCAD. It is built on real B-rep solid modeling using the OpenCASCADE kernel, giving users the ability to sketch on a plane and pull that sketch into a solid through extrude, revolve, loft, and sweep operations, then apply fillets and chamfers, run boolean operations, and cut threads. Because the modeling workflow is history-based, any step of a design's construction can be edited later, allowing parametric-style adjustments without starting over. This makes the software suitable for hobbyist fabrication, prototyping, and general maker projects where a balance of approachability and genuine solid-modeling capability is needed. For fabrication workflows, sketches export to SVG and DXF at 1:1 millimeter scale, targeting laser cutters and 2.5D CNC machines. Interoperability is a central strength: the software imports STEP, IGES, BREP, STL, SVG, and DXF files, and exports to STEP, STL, IGES, BREP, glTF, OBJ, 3MF, SVG, and DXF, covering common exchange formats for 3D printing, further CAD processing, and rendering pipelines. Materializr is published by Materializr and fits within the 3D CAD and computer-aided design category, specifically the maker-oriented segment of that market. The current version is 1.6.0, and the project has released thirteen versions in total, indicating an active development history with multiple iterations available. As open-source software, it offers makers an accessible yet capable modeling environment that bridges the gap between entry-level browser tools and complex professional CAD systems, while supporting the file formats and fabrication outputs commonly required in workshops, maker spaces, and small-scale manufacturing contexts.
